Hawaii will Welcome Canadians with no Restrictions Starting in September

August 3, 2020

While the Canada U.S. land border has been closed to non-essential travel since March, air travel has not been restricted for Canadians entering the US. Hawaii was the only US state to imposed a mandatory 14-day quarantine for all out-of-state travelers during the pandemic. But Canadians will soon be allowed to travel to Hawaii without quarantine restrictions.

Starting on September 1st, all travelers including Canadians, will be allowed to visit Hawaii without having to quarantine, as long as they provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test upon arrival.

According to a statement by the Hawaii Department of Transportation, travelers must take a COVID-19 test within 72 hours of boarding a flight to Hawaii. There will be no tests available at any of Hawaii’s airports and travellers are responsible for the costs of their own tests.

If Canadians are unable to provide a negative test result upon arrival, the department said they will be required to quarantine for 14 days.

The process of finalizing the requirements of entry will be determined in the coming weeks and the September 1st date is still tentative and subject to evaluation.

Travel Insurance

Canadian insurance companies continue to restrict travel insurance coverage during the Canadian governments travel advisory. Once the travel advisory is lifted, many insurance companies have committed to offering coverage for COVID-19 but policy conditions still apply today.

However, Canadians can purchase travel health insurance from US providers that cover COVID-19 today. Canada to USA offers these products to Canadians traveling to any country outside of Canada. These products provide full health coverage for Canadians including COVID-19 and related illnesses with coverage amounts up to $1 million dollars.
